چکیده

Eye movements were monitored as participants followed spoken instructions to manipulate one of four objects pictured on a computer screen. Target words occurred in utterance-medial (e.g., Put the cap next to the square) or utterance-Wnal position (e.g., Now click on the cap). Displays consisted of the target picture (e.g., a cap), a monosyllabic competitor picture (e.g., a cat), a polysyllabic competitor picture (e.g., a captain) and a distractor (e.g., a beaker). The relative proportion of Wxations to the two types of competitor pictures changed as a function of the position of the target word in the utterance, demonstrating that lexical competition is modulated by prosodically conditioned phonetic variation. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. Effects of prosodically modulated sub-phonetic variation on lexical competition.

Prosodic influences on consonant production in Dutch: Effects of prosodic boundaries, phrasal accent and lexical stress

Prosodic influences on phonetic realizations of four Dutch consonants (/t d s z/) were examined. Sentences were constructed containing these consonants in word-initial position; the factors lexical stress, phrasal accent and prosodic boundary were manipulated between sentences. Eleven Dutch speakers read these sentences aloud. The patterns found in acoustic measurements of these utterances (e.g...

The Specificity of Online Variation in Speech Production

Phonetic variation is sensitive to lexical properties of words, such as frequency and neighborhood density, as well as contextual properties, such as predictability. Previous studies of lexically-induced variation have observed that both vowels and consonants are phonetically enhanced in words from dense neighborhoods, and have suggested that this effect is modulated only by the number and freq...

Lexical Stress, Phrasal Accent and Prosodic Boundary in the Realization of Domain-Initial Stops in Dutch

This study examines the effects of prosodic boundaries, lexical stress, and phrasal accent on the acoustic realization of stops (/t, d/) in Dutch, with special attention paid to language-specificity in the phonetics-prosody interface. The results obtained from various acoustic measures show systematic phonetic variations in the production of /t d/ as a function of prosodic position, which may b...

Effect of contralateral noise on energetic and informational masking on speech-in-speech intelligibility

This experiment tested the advantage of binaural presentation of an interfering noise in a task involving identification of monaurally-presented words. These words were embedded in three types of noise: a stationary noise, a speech-modulated noise and a speech-babble noise, in order to assess energetic and informational masking contributions to binaural unmasking. Our results showed important i...
